Technology keeps shifting. In this case, "shift" kept shifting quite literally. Confused? Here’s how your favorite shift key got its name.
If you look down at your keyboard right now, you’ll see the "Shift" key. We press it thousands of times a week to capitalize a letter, type a question mark, or add an exclamation point to an email. But in a digital world where there are no moving parts, what exactly are we shifting?
To answer that, we have to travel back to the late 19th century—long before touchscreens, laptops, or even electric keyboards.
The ALL-CAPS Era
When the first commercially successful typewriters hit the market in the 1870s, they had a major limitation: they yelled. Early typewriters, like the famous Sholes and Glidden machine, did not have a mechanism to switch between uppercase and lowercase letters. They simply printed everything in capital letters.
As typewriters became more popular in businesses and offices, the need for proper capitalization became obvious. But engineers faced a problem: adding a separate key for every lowercase letter, uppercase letter, number, and punctuation mark would make the keyboard massive, overly complex, and incredibly expensive to produce. (Some companies actually tried this, creating cumbersome "double-keyboard" machines with twice as many keys).
Enter the Remington No. 2
The elegant solution arrived in 1878 with the release of the Remington Standard No. 2.
Instead of adding more keys, the inventors put two metal character stamps (one lowercase, one uppercase) onto the end of a single typebar—the metal arm that swings up to strike the ink ribbon against the paper.
But how did you tell the machine which of the two stamps to use? That’s where the magic happened.
A Literal Shift
The Remington No. 2 featured a brand new key on the keyboard: the "Shift" key.
When a typist pressed this key, a mechanical lever system engaged and physically shifted the entire paper carriage (or the internal cylinder) up or down. By moving the paper's target position by a fraction of an inch, the swinging typebar would strike the ribbon with its upper character stamp (the capital letter) instead of its lower character stamp (the lowercase letter).
It was heavy, clunky, and required actual finger strength to lift the mechanical carriage—which is why the Shift keys were made large and placed on both sides of the keyboard so the typist could use their pinky fingers while keeping their hands in proper position.
The Legacy of Analog Words
Over 140 years later, the heavy mechanical carriages are gone. Our keyboards are flat, silent, and entirely digital. When you press the Shift key on your laptop or smartphone today, nothing physically moves inside the device. It merely sends a different binary code to your computer's processor.
Yet, the name remains. Every time you capitalize a letter, you are paying homage to the clanking, heavy, mechanical genius of the 1878 Remington No. 2.
